<B>1840-C $5 AU55 PCGS.</B></I> Variety 2-B, Die State I, lacking the die crack through I in AMERICA. The 1840-C is one of the least available Charlotte half eagles. Douglas Winter (1998) writes that: "This date is very rare in about Uncirculated and is an extreme rarity in full Mint State ... " The Choice AU coin offered in this lot retains luster in the protected areas of the bright yellow-gold surfaces, and some localized minor softness occurs in portions of Liberty's hair and the eagle's leg feathers. An even distribution of light contact marks is seen on both sides.
