<B>1840-C $5 AU50 PCGS.</B></I> Variety 2-B. In his reference <I>Gold Coins of the Charlotte Mint,</B></I> Douglas Winter opines that the 1840-C is the second-rarest C-mint half eagle, behind only the 1842-C Small Date. The stars, the hair above the coronet, and other peripheral elements are bold, while the centers are typically struck. A couple of small mint-made strike-thrus on the upper reverse rim are noted, along with a moderate mark on the field above the eagle.
