At the MS63 level, we believe this piece is tied for finest known and may well be the right for a connoisseur's gold quarter eagle set. The finest example listed on Winter's Condition Census is an MS63 from the 1980 ANA Sale. We do not know of the whereabouts of that coin today nor how it grades. However, with the tightening of grading standards over the past 22 years it is questionable whether that coin is in an MS63 holder today. This is a lustrous, high quality coin whose details are sharp on each side with no areas of weakness. The smooth green- to yellow-gold surfaces exhibit a strong a nice sheen in the fields with mint luster intermixed with almost prooflike reflection. Furthermore, there are no distracting marks on either side that can be pointed to as a reliable pedigree identifier, just a few wispy contacts allowable by the Mint State 63 definition.
