1840-C $2 1/2 MS63 NGC. Winter 1-A. At the MS63 level, we believe this piece is tied for finest known and may well be the finest known. The finest example listed on Winter's Condition Census is an MS63 from the 1980 ANA Sale. We do not know of the whereabouts of that coin today nor how it grades. However, with the tightening of grading standards over the past 22 years it is questionable whether that coin is in an MS63 holder today. Only two other pieces have been so graded (both by PCGS), and of course, there is no way to know if these duplicate the appearance of this coin. Our best guess, though, is that these two appearances on the Population Report do indeed represent at least one other coin. This is a very impressive piece. The striking details are well brought up on each side with no obvious areas of weakness. The flashy green-gold surfaces exhibit a strong semi-prooflike sheen in the fields with satiny mint luster intermixed. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending upon one's point of view), there are no singular marks on either side that can be pointed to as a reliable pedigree identifier. From the Ashland City Collection.
