<B>1840-C $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS.</B></I> Variety 1-A. Quite well struck and an interesting comparison to the PCGS AU50 in this collection. This example has full detail in the centers and is sharp at the borders as well. The surfaces are clean and choice with just a few light marks seen in the fields. There are no hairlines or signs of cleaning and/or mishandling. The obverse retains a good deal of original luster while the reverse is nearly fully lustrous and would grade MS61 or so if rated on its own merits. There are splashes of rich green-gold color on the obverse; the reverse is more even in appearance with a pleasing green-gold shade. This is an attractive coin that would fit well into a high quality set of Charlotte quarter eagles.
