1840-C $2 1/2 AU50 PCGS
1840-C $2 1/2 AU50 PCGS. Variety 1-A. Softly struck, with an unusual appearance that is similar to that seen on some 1842-C (and 1856-C) quarter eagles. The obverse is especially soft while the reverse has detail that is more consistent with the assigned grade. This piece was struck on an improperly prepared planchet and there is a strip-like flaw on the obverse between stars 1 and 2 up to the chin, and another is seen on the face. Very little luster is present but this is probably more the result of the aforementioned improper preparation of the planchet than actual wear or mishandling. The good news is that this coin is original in appearance with deep green-gold color on both sides. We have never seen another 1840-C quarter eagle with a similar appearance and this is an interesting study coin for the specialist.
This issue is popular because of its status as the first Liberty Head quarter eagle from Charlotte. It is reasonably obtainable in circulated grades up to and including XF45, and it is moderately scarce in the lower to middle AU grades. As many as nine or 10 are known in Uncirculated including a number of relatively choice examples.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
