1840 25C MS63 PCGS. Briggs 1-A. A Robert Ball Hughes modification of Christian Gobrecht's original d
1840 25C MS63 PCGS. Briggs 1-A. A Robert Ball Hughes modification of Christian Gobrecht's original design, the Drapery variety of the Seated Liberty Quarter made its debut in 1840 with a delivery of 188,127 pieces at the Philadelphia Mint and 43,000 coins at the New Orleans Mint. There are two known die marriages of the 1840-P, and Briggs describes the first of these (Briggs 1-A) as a transitional hub variety. Although most 1840 Drapery Quarters were produced from the Briggs 1-A die pairing, the variety is not at all common in Mint State. In fact, Briggs (1991) assigns this variety an R.6 rating in Unc. Noticeably prooflike, the present example in uncommonly well struck for the type with particularly impressive definition on the eagle's left (facing) leg feathers, right (facing) wing feathers, and over the uppermost arrow feathers. There is essentially no toning, and the number of wispy abrasions is consistent with the assigned grade. A coin that is sure to elicit strong bids from advanced Seated Quarter collectors. Population: 5 in 63, just four are finer (9/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
