1840<10C> No Drapery MS68 NGC. The Stars Dimes of 1838-1840 are a distinctive type that lack the drapery from Liberty's elbow as seen on later issues. Of the three years this type was issued, the 1840 has the lowest official mintage with only 981,500 pieces struck. It is available in lower grades, but Gem and finer examples are very rare. This particular piece is fully struck in all areas and exhibits a partially reflective appearance in the fields. Deep cobalt-blue and reddish-russet toning enhances the peripheries, with essentially brilliant centers. Perhaps the very finest known of this date, as it certainly exceeds any other certified examples. As expected of the grade, there are no distracting surface marks on this lustrous, Superb rarity. The "Star" designation, indicating superior eye appeal, is awarded to few coins of any grade. Census: 1 in 68, 0 finer (3/06).
