<B>1840 $1 Seated Dollar PR65 NGC.</B></I> Ex: P. Kaufman. Only a small number of proof 1840 Seated dollars are known, including this impressive Gem that ranks as one of the finest certified. Less than a dozen proofs are identified, and nearly all others are in lower numerical grades. This example is tied with one other piece for the best certified by NGC.<BR> Estimates of survival indicate that about 10 to 12 proof 1840 dollars are known, although the actual number may be slightly larger. David Akers suggested in the Pittman catalog that about 20 to 25 proofs were coined in 1840. We have not attempted a complete census, but a few of the better examples include the Pittman PR64 piece, the Amon Carter specimen, the Floyd Starr coin that is offered here, the Garrett Collection coin, and a PR64 example offered in our Morris Silverman sale. Some business strikes are known with fully prooflike fields, often cataloged as proofs in the past, making a census list difficult to construct. The same is true for certain other Seated dollars.<BR> The obverse has a short crack into the field from star 12 just above the inside point, not mentioned by Breen in his <I>Proof Encyclopedia</B></I> or by Bowers in his <I>Silver Dollar Encyclopedia</B></I>. The die crack appears on several proofs, and may be a further diagnostic to distinguish these pieces from prooflike business strikes. A common reverse die was used for the first decade of proof Seated dollars. Tiny lumps join the outside right diagonal of the final A in AMERICA, and these are seen on all years from 1840 through 1850. Some vertical shield lines extend into the horizontal crossbars above, another proof characteristic during these years. The use of common reverse dies for many proof coins of various denominations from copper to gold is well known among advanced numismatists. John Dannreuther and others have identified a number of these multi-year dies.<BR> Delightful proof mirrors are visible beneath medium gray, lilac, and iridescent toning, with splashes of darker toning along parts of the obverse border.
