1840 $1 MS62 NGC. Christian Gobrecht designed the obverse of the new silver dollar design that debuted on a regular coinage issue in 1840. Well struck on all of the design elements, this rare Mint State example has semi-reflective fields that give the piece a dynamic, flashy appearance under the light. The pearl-gray surfaces show a few light splashes of russet color. A minor rim ding is observed on the reverse near 6 o'clock, as scattered small marks and pinscratches on each side also limit the grade. Just 61,005 pieces were struck, and survivors are scarce at all grade levels. Census: 13 in 62, 8 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
