Popular $1,000 “The Bank of the United States” Note

Philadelphia, PA. The Bank of the United States. One Thousand Dollars. December 15, 1840. Choice Very Fine.

Haxby US-3, G-100. 7¼” x 3¾”. This is a nice original circulated example of this ornate large, $1,000 denomination note. This note utilizes the finest craftsmanship of the Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. firm’s expertise to design one of the most impressive types of banknotes ever issued. The portraits at the left are David Rittenhouse, William Penn, and Thomas Paine. The portraits at the right are Robert Fulton, Benjamin Franklin and Robert Morris. At the center is a superb vignette of the Bank’s building. The vignettes are nice, the color is even and the paper remains fairly bright, and there are only the normal light reverse endorsement stamps and light folds. Signed in bold brown ink "T. Dunlap" (Thomas Dunlap) as President of the Bank of the United States. Authentic examples of these popular notes are becoming ever more scarce and valuable.

The Bank of the United States failed on February 4, 1841. On May 1, 1841, the Bank of the United States assigned more than $7 million worth of securities to trustees for the repayment of the post notes issued to the city banks. One of the trustees was Samuel W, Jones, a director of The Philadelphia Bank. The creation of this trust instilled so much confidence in the board of The Philadelphia Bank that two days later it declared a semiannual dividend of 3%.
There are four interest payment notations on verso:
(1) "PAID FORTY-EIGHT AND EIGHT-TENTHS PER CENT OF THE PRINCIPAL AND INTEREST TO JUNE 15, 1846"
(2) "PAID SIXTEEN PER CENT ON ACCOUNT OF THE BALANCE OF PRINCIPAL AND INTEREST TO JUNE 15, 1847"
(3) "PAID SIXTEEN 74-100 PER CENT AS ABOVE, TO OCT 1ST, 1840" signed in ink "J. W. Fairman"
(4) "PAID TWENTY ONE 95576/100000 PER CENT. FINAL DIVIDEND UNDER TRUST OF 1ST MAY, 1841".
