ALS from Jacob Marshall of the 183rd Pennsylvania Infantry, Company C, to his mother. Accompanied by cover. Written in pencil and datelined ''October 30 1864 / Camp Near Petersburg Va,'' letter reads in full: ''Dear Mother I now take my Pencil in hand to Let you know that i am Well hoping that these few Lines Will find you in the Same Dear Mother i Receved your most kind and Welcome Letter and Wich said that your Where going to Move wich i hope you Will do soon and Let me know as you can and I Would Like to know if father got Back Pay and Bounty and you need not send them Shirts for i hav Drawn Shirts and Drawers and Blankets there has Been some hard fighting over here But our Regiment has not Been in it But We do not no how Soon We Will have to go So No More at Present But Remian your affectionate son / Jacob Marshall.'' Marshall writes just two days after Confederate soldiers turned back the Union advance in the Richmond-Petersburg Campaign at the hotly contested Boydton Plank Road. The Confederacy managed to hold the position against Federal forces for the duration of the winter. Marshall mustered into Company C on 12 November 1863 and mustered out on 13 July 1865. 1.5pp. letter measures 5'' x 8''. Soiling at creases and scattered foxing, otherwise excellent condition.
