ALS from Robert M. Spense of the 183rd Pennsylvania Infantry, Company H, to his parents. Written in ink and datelined ''Camp in Stevensbury Hts / Aprile 28th 1864'' letter reads in part: ''…send me some smoking to bacoo and some cigars and some lemons and a stationary package of paper and a bottle of Jamaker ginger you can send me any think you pleas. Don't send of any thing that will spoil…there was one of our fellows by the name of champion was cleaning his musket and it went of and shot hime through the arme and the docters took of his arme some of the fellows is all the time folling with there piece it is a wonder there not more of them shot then there is. I want your photographs if you have not got the money to get it never mind it tell I acct some money and I will send some home to you…I want you to save some of it fore me to see whether I come hom a gain or not…I expect to be a march perty soon rite soon…'' Spense mustered into Company H on 21 January 1864. He died on 18 November 1864 at Chester, Pennsylvania. The 183rd Pennsylvania saw action at the Wilderness, Petersburg and Deep Bottom. 3pp. letter measures 3'' x 6''. Separation at folds inexpertly repaired with tape. Scattered foxing, otherwise very good condition.
