Letter from Jacob Marshall of the 183rd Pennsylvania Infantry. Written in pencil and datelined ''April 8, 1864 / Camp Near Stevenburg,'' letter reads in part: ''…I now take my pencil in hand to let you know I'm well and I hope these few lines will find you in the same. Dear Mother I received your kind and welcome letter and was glad to hear you received the 50 dollars. Dear Mother we have moved since I wrote last we have moved from the third Brigade to the 1 Brigade…of about 7 miles…we expect to join the fight in 2 or three weeks. Dear Mother I want you to send me a Check shirt and not to Big or Small and you can send it By Mail When you send it Send in wrapper be sure and do not forget to When you Direct your Letters Direct your letters to 183rd Regt PV Co C Corps 1 Divs 1 Brigade you need not put Camp Near the Rapidan But Direct it as said Dear mother I wish you could send me 5 dollars But don't forget to send me shirt I wish you to send me some postage stamps No more at present but remain your Affectionate Son…'' The 183rd Pennsylvania was engaged in battle at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Totopotomy, Cold Harbor, Deep Bottom, Petersburg and Dabney's Mill. Jacob Marshall mustered into Company C on 12 November 1863 and mustered out on 13 July 1865 at Washington D.C. Letter measures 5.5'' x 9'' and runs 2pp. Toning and chipping to edges, otherwise excellent condition.
