Hand written letter of receipt dated "14th Dec 1837" addressed to Stephen H. Everitt, signed by Republic of Texas comptroller and future Texas Governor Francis R. Lubbock. 3" x 5.5". Larger document is embossed top left corner "D. & J. Ames, Springfield", early Sabine Pass, Texas dated July 17, 1839. It is receipt for items purchased for Republic of Texas Custom House Dept, Sabine Pass. Stephen Hendrickson Everitt (1806–1844) wrote a letter to Republic of Texas President Mirabeau B. Lamar on March 11, 1839, seeking to establish a post office in the area. There was already a Republic of Texas custom's house, established in 1837, as well as a United States customs house at Garrison Ridge, and the nearest post office was 40 miles away. Everitt signed the Declaration of November 7, 1835, the Texas Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution of the Republic. Although apparently not a practicing physician, he was often referred to as Dr. Everitt.
