1839 PS$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Restrike, Pollock-116, R.3, PR63 PCGS. Silver. Die Alignment IV (center of Liberty's head opposite right side of F in OF). Identifiable as an 1857-1859 restrike by the presence of microscopic die cracks around the reverse periphery and the alignment of the center of Liberty's head opposite the right side of F in OF. A later series of 1839 dollars were struck, probably in the late 1860s or even beyond. These pieces have a coin turn and, of course, show the same die cracks as the restrikes from the late 1850s. Gobrecht dollars dated 1839 have been at the top of collector's want lists for more than a hundred years. Only three years are needed for a complete date set of Gobrechts. Of course, there are many variants in each year, but a basic type set would require only three dates: 1836, 1838, and 1839. Of all three subtypes of 1839 dollars--Reeded Edge, No Stars; Plain Edge, No Stars; and Plain Edge, With Stars--just over 300 pieces were produced. The vast majority are of the Reeded Edge, No Stars variety.
Most of the surviving Die Alignment IV 1839 dollars are no better than PR62, and some AU coins are known. This piece shows deeply reflective proof fields on each side. The surfaces show only slight reddish-brown toning with a few light hairlines that account for the grade. Sharply struck in most areas except the stars on the left side of the obverse. An exceptional 1839 Gobrecht that should be of great interest to a wide variety of 19th century type collectors.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
