1839 PS$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Restrike, Pollock-116, R.3, PR60 PCGS. Silver. Die Alignment IV (medallic turn, head of Liberty opposite the F in OF). The general rule of thumb is if an 1839 dollar is in high grade it must be a restrike. Of course, that is not always true, but the original strikings, which actually were struck in 1839, are generally circulated or impaired in some manner. Restrikes occur in Die Alignment IV and show microscopic die cracks through MERI and other peripheral lettering on the reverse. The restrikes were most likely produced from 1857 through 1859 under James Ross Snowden's tenure as Mint Director.
This lovely 1839 Gobrecht dollar has brightly reflective fields. The hairlines that account for the grade are greatly subdued by light golden-brown color that is present in the center of each side with deeper blue around the reverse periphery. Sharply, but not completely struck up in all areas.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
