1839 PS$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Restrike, Pollock-116, R.3-4--Improperly Cleaned--Proof NCS. Die Alignment IV. The head of Liberty is opposite the right side of the F in OF, with the eagle flying level after a medallic turn. Stars 5 and 8 are double punched, as always on 1839 Gobrecht Dollars. On this example, Liberty's foot and sandal show a bit of striking weakness, as often found on these coins. Common wisdom holds that 300 1839 Gobrecht Dollars were struck. However, this number is not included in the Bullion Journals for 1839. Modern research by Mike Carboneau and James Gray indicates that fewer than 300 1839 Dollars were actually produced, and that the original issue was struck entirely in Die Alignment IV, and from perfect dies. That would make sense as this issue was restruck on two later occasions to satisfy collector demand for these exceptionally well designed coins. This particular piece is a restrike, probably made during James Ross Snowden's administration in the Mint in the 1857-1859 period, as seen by the presence of microscopic die cracks at the top of MERI in AMERICA. The surfaces are unusually bright throughout from cleaning, but other than the obvious hairlines there are no distracting contact marks on either side.
