1839<PS$1> Name Omitted, Judd-104 Restrike, Pollock-116, R.3, PR64 NGC. Die Alignment IV. The head of Liberty is opposite the right side of the F in OF, with the eagle flying level after a medallic turn. The mintage is unknown; although 300 originals are reported for 1839. Restrike 1839 dollars were made in Die Alignment IV and have microscopic reverse die cracks through MERI and other reverse letters. These coins were probably struck from 1857 until 1859. In general, these pieces are well preserved and usually appear in grades of PR60 through PR65; however, some AU coins are known. The average grade for coins in this category is less than PR62, placing this coin well ahead of the grading curve for Judd-104s. Stars 5 and 8 are double punched, as always on 1839 Gobrecht dollars. On this example, Liberty's foot and sandal show a bit of striking weakness, as do the lower obverse stars. The naturally toned specimen offered here, while subject to patchy hairlines on the left side of the reverse, exhibits generous arcs of blue and violet iridescent toning over both sides, the balance of the coin being a lighter olive-gray. A simply splendid coin for an advanced numismatist.
