1839<PS$1> Name Omitted, Judd-104 Restrike, Pollock-116, R.3, PR65 NGC. Die Alignment IV. The head of Liberty is opposite the right side of the F in OF, with the eagle flying level after a medallic turn. Restrike 1839 dollars made in Die Alignment IV show microscopic reverse die cracks through MERI and other reverse letters. These coins were probably struck from 1857 until 1859. In general, these coins are well preserved and usually appear in grades of PR60 through PR65; however, some AU coins are known. The average grade for coins in this category is less than PR62. Needless to say, this piece is at the top of the Condition Census as only six other pieces have been so graded by NGC and one by PCGS, with one coin actually finer (an NGC PR66). The striking details are crisp throughout with strong definition on all the design elements. The fields are deeply mirrored and each side is covered with smoky gray and deep blue toning. There are essentially no contact marks that would be easy to use for pedigree identifiers as any flaws on this Gem are so minute that they might not appear in other previous catalogs.
From The Jack Lee Collection, III
