1839 PS$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Original, Pollock-116
1839 PS$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Original, Pollock-116, R.3--Tooled--NCS. Impaired Proof. Die Alignment IV. Original. 409.2 grains. Head of Liberty opposite the O in OF with the eagle flying almost level following a medal turn. A well circulated Gobrecht dollar with naturally toned surfaces, and no reverse die cracks. All indications suggest that this coin is one of the 300 original 1839 dollars that were made and released into circulation in December 1839. Under the gray toning, the reverse shows signs of hairline scratches from an old cleaning. This is the plate coin from the ANA Grading Standards book (as shown in both the new and old editions). Most points of agreement can be easily identified by marks on the reverse; however, the small black mark on star 1 on the obverse does not show in the plate photo because it was acquired sometime after the photo was taken. The 1839 dollar shows a full figure of Liberty, with pole and shield, on the obverse. The stars that had been placed on the reverse side of the 1836 (Judd-60) dollars have now been removed, and 13 stars have been placed around the figure of Liberty on the obverse. In this case, the 1839 dollars are similar to the 1838 pattern design. A majestic flying eagle (symbolizing the United States) adorns the reverse surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination ONE DOLLAR. An interesting coin and one from a small number of original dollars made in 1839.
Ex: 1999 FUN Auction (Heritage, 1/99), lot 5501.
