1839 P$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Original, Pollock-116, R.3, PR40 ANACS. Die Alignment IV. Original. Head of Liberty opposite the O in OF with the eagle flying level following a medal turn. Struck in December 1839, originals of this date do not show die cracks through MERI and other reverse lettering, as seen on later date restrikes.
An interesting feature on 1839 dollars was just discovered at the Milwaukee ANA by John Dannreuther. He observed that C. GOBRECHT F. was effaced from the master die. A definite, oval-shaped depression can be seen on the rock beneath Liberty with graver lines present, and faint "ghosts" of several letters can be seen with strong magnification. The remarkable part of this find is that it took 170 years for someone to discover this! It also gives some credence to what has recently been considered the equivalent of a "numismatic old wive's tale" that Gobrecht's name was positioned too prominently on the coin.
The surfaces are medium russet-brown with underlying lilac color. A couple of shallow pinscratches are located (but barely visible) in the lower right obverse field, and otherwise there are only the small contact marks one would expect from a PR40 coin. Even friction over the highpoints of the design.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
