1839-O $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. High Date, Wide Fraction, Breen-6152, McCloskey-A, R.4. Somewhat more plentiful than the Close Fraction variety, yet elusive in Mint State grades. The obverse has the date closer to the mintmark, and stars 11 and 12 each boldly repunched. Fine clash marks are visible at the ear, and evidence of die lapping is noted within the hair detail. The Wide Fraction reverse has both digits far from the fraction bar. The die shows considerable evidence of lapping, with the stem almost entirely missing; only the tip of the branch is visible as a small island in the field over the left serif of the D in the denomination. Several die cracks can be seen, most evident through the 2, curving to the top leaf, and continuing through the I of UNITED to the border. This Mint State piece is frosty and lustrous with brilliant green-gold surfaces. Census: 22 in 61, 35 finer (1/08).

Coin Engraver: William Kneass

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
