1839-O $2 1/2 --Improperly Cleaned--NCS. Unc Details. High Date, Wide Fraction, Breen-6152, McCloskey-A, R.3. This was the first year of quarter eagle coinage at the New Orleans Mint. It was also the sole delivery for the Classic Head, No Motto type of that denomination with an "O" mintmark, making this an issue of obvious importance for type purposes. This example is well detailed and unworn, with light green-gold coloration and few surface marks, none of which are individually noteworthy. A few faint hairlines in the fields testify to an old cleaning. A peculiar die lump (as made) resides just above the fraction on the lower reverse, and should not be mistaken for an abrasion.

Coin Engraver: William Kneass

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
