1839-O $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Low Date, Close Fraction, Breen-61532, McCloskey-B, R.4. On the reverse the denomination features an abnormally large loop on the 2 that touches the fraction bar, with the numerator nearly so. This coin is popular as the one-year Obverse Mintmark subtype, as an example of New Orleans Mint gold from the debut year of that mint, and also because, as seen here, the issue is often found in perfect medallic alignment, rather than coin turn. This charming piece shows just a touch of light circulation on the still-lustrous green-gold surfaces. Although construction was completed in 1839 at the New Orleans Mint, a severe outbreak of yellow fever curtailed its operation from July 1 until November 30.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
