1839-D $5 MS61 NGC. Winter 2-A. Continuing the tradition of the short-lived but noticeably different head of Liberty, the 1839-D is a low mintage issue with only 18,939 pieces produced. Many examples of this issue is known to have a distinctive grainy texture. This piece, however, is bright and satiny with only microscopic evidence in the obverse fields of any granularity. Fully struck throughout, including all the star centrils, and as such finer than the MS61 we offered in our 2000 October Long Beach Sale. The fields are semi-reflective and there are no detracting abrasions on either side, but several pronounced die cracks are noted. Population: 1 in 61, 2 finer (10/02).From the Ashland City Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
