1839-D $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 2-A. This is a splendid near-Mint example that represents the first year of issue for the Liberty Head half eagles, and the only year with mintmarks between the date and bust on the obverse. Beginning in 1840, the mintmark was moved to the reverse and its standard position below the olive stem. Technically, branch mint examples of the 1839 half eagles are one-year type coins. This piece has frosty luster with bright yellow-gold surfaces that exhibit typical scattered surface marks on each side. Seldom are examples found at this grade level, and only about a dozen finer Mint State pieces are known. Population: 2 in 58, 7 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
