1839-D $5 AU55 PCGS. Ex: North Georgia. Variety 2-A. The 1839-D half eagle is an important one-year type coin, as the 1838-D issues employed the Classic Head design. Variety 1-A of the 1839-D shows the obverse mintmark directly above the 3 in the date and level, while the 2-A shows the D shifted a bit to the right, more or less centered between the 3 and 9, and it is tilted slightly upward. This issue is popular for its obverse mintmark style as well as for the D for Dahlonega. Much luster radiates from the problem-free surfaces of this delectable piece, which shows the boldest strike for the issue that the present cataloger has ever seen. Douglas Winter's Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint comments, "Many 1839-D half eagles have weakness of strike on the hair near the ear of Liberty, the brow and the back of the bun. The reverse is always sharper than the obverse and it usually shows complete definition, even on the legs and claws of the eagle. Some are known which show a very sharp strike on both the obverse and reverse and these are considered to be very desirable by specialists." This is such a coin, coming from the fabled North Georgia collection that we auctioned in January 1999 at the FUN show. The strike on both sides is essentially full, with complete definition on the hair over Liberty's ear, at the bun, and elsewhere. Light scuffing in the fields will totally fail to dampen enthusiasm for this remarkable coin.
