1839-D $5 AU55 NGC. Winter 2-A. This is the more common of the two known die marriages of the '39-D Five. Of course, with just 18,939 pieces produced and no more than 100 coins believed extant (per Winter, 1997), the 1839-D is not really a "common" coin at all. In fact, the high grade rarity of this, the premier Liberty Half Eagle from the Dahlonega Mint is such that About Uncirculated survivors are thought to number only 14-16 pieces. The quality of strike for this issue varies greatly from coin to coin, with the present example certainly among the best produced survivors. Both sides are boldly, if not sharply struck in all areas with only the lightest rub over the highpoints and in the fields. Warm tan-gold color blankets both sides, neither of which are excessively abraded for a circulated product of the Dahlonega Mint. A pair of scrapes in the obverse field inside star 13 are noted for pedigree purposes. In high grades (AU and finer), the 1839-D is the eighth rarest Half Eagle produced at is branch mint, and it is more difficult to locate than such later issues as the 1846-D/D, 1848-D, 1849-D, and 1855-D. We last offered an AU55 (PCGS) example as lot 6375 in our November 2001 Santa Clara Signature Sale. That coin brought $6,325.
