1839-D $5 AU50 PCGS. Variety 2-A. The 1839-D is interesting for several reasons. It has an obverse mintmark, a feature not found on any other date of the Liberty half eagle series. The portrait also differs from the 1840 and later version, since Liberty has an uncharacteristically sleepy appearance. Of course, numismatists take greater notice of the low mintage of 18,939 pieces. This nicely struck example has a pleasing obverse, while the reverse has marks above the left (facing) shoulder and above the eagle's head. Purchased in the 1930's at face value by Karl Stecher Sr. from coins turned in by the public as per President Roosevelt's March 9, 1933 directive. A collector's envelope accompanies, and has the comments "1839d 5.00 vf." Population: 14 in 50, 24 finer (1/07).
From The Stecher Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
