1839 Charleston SERVANT Slave Hire Badge. Number 1247. A flat diamond-shaped tag with clipped corners, 58mm x 60mm. Interestingly, each corner has a hole that appears to be made by a square nail of the period leading us to speculate that this badge was nailed up on a wall, possibly by the slave that had to wear it for a year. Manufactured by silversmith William M. Rouse. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): "*CHARLESTON*" in a crescent-shaped bar punch (the "N*" is weak); an incuse "1247" in individual punches; "SERVANT" in a rectangular bar punch with a dotted border; and "1839" bar punched. Overall in very fine condition exhibiting a dark brown patina with olive green devices.

There were an estimated 3852 badges manufactured with the 1839 date.

Shipping: Small Collectibles (view shipping information)
