1839-C $5 XF45 PCGS. Variety 1-A. Well struck with all of the major details visible except for a few stars that lack their full radial lines. There are a number of small marks in the fields but none are obtrusive; a small scratch can be discerned to the left of the first S in STATES and there are a few light marks on the reverse rim. A good deal of luster is present and this suggests a higher grade than that assigned by PCGS. Some light yellow-gold color on both sides adds to the overall appeal. Housed in an old PCGS holder and conservatively graded by today's standards.
Like the 1838-C, the 1839-C is a distinct one-year type and this has made it very popular with type collectors. This date is not really all that scarce but locating choice, problem-free examples in the XF45 to AU55 grade range is far more difficult than most collectors realize.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
