1839-C $5 MS63 NGC. Variety 1-A. The 1839-C Half
1839-C $5 MS63 NGC. Variety 1-A. The 1839-C Half Eagle is a different type than the issues that follow beginning in 1840. Side-by-side comparison reveals several small design differences on the obverse that, while plainly evident, are not quite so pronounced as the differences on the 1838-39 tens. But the 1839-C has the important distinction of being the only Coronet Half Eagle with an obverse mintmark.
While 17,205 pieces were produced, the '39-C is quite elusive in all grades. Choice XF coins are very scarce and only 12-14 AUs are believed to exist. Of the handful of Mint State coins known, this fits well into the Condition Census. The coin has soft, frosted mint luster with medium yellow-gold surfaces. The striking details are very boldly brought up on each side with remarkably sharp details on the eagle's feathers. Several marks can serve as future identifiers; a couple in the field behind Liberty's lowest hair curl and a vertical grease mark (as struck) above the eagle's neck and wing on the reverse. Exceptional quality and a great rarity in this condition. Population: 2 in 63, 0 finer (2/05).
