<b>1839-C &#36;2.50 Classic Head. NGC graded AU58.</b> Bright and lustrous pale yellow gold with some prooflike radiance in the protected regions. Minor abrasions in the field and on Liberty. From the second year of Charlotte Mint coinage, and the last of just two years with the mintmark placement on the obverse &#40;the mintmark was switched to the reverse of the denomination when the change was made in 1840 to the new Liberty motif by Gobrecht. Douglas Winter&#39;s reference book on the Charlotte Mint gold notes two varieties for the date, the 1839/8 overdate, and the 1839/9 repunched 9 variety; the Guide Book of United States coins lists but a single variety and places the mintage at 18,140 pieces.

In 1834 the quarter eagle was redesigned. A ribbon binding the hair, bearing the word LIBERTY, replaces the Liberty cap. The motto was omitted from the reverse, possibly because of the more constricted space above the eagle. Designer was William Kneass. Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans mints struck these <b>&#40;PCGS # 7699&#41;</b>
