1839-C $2 1/2 XF45 ANACS. Winter 2-B, McCloskey-B, R.4. The original mintage of this date is a scant 18,140 pieces, perhaps 4,860 coins of which were delivered from this die marriage (per Winter). Winter 2-B is the rarest of the three known varieties of this issue, and it is believed to comprise no more than 20% of survivors. Both sides exhibit rich olive-gold coloration with appreciably bold definition for an 1839-C Quarter Eagle that saw 15 points of circulation. Of course, the strike is a little soft in the center of the obverse and over the star centrils on that side, and the reverse olive branch is attenuated from excessive die polishing. The scattered handling marks include a few moderate abrasions in the upper reverse field, and the diagnostic die defect (as produced) on Liberty's cheek is evident. As an issue, the 1839-C is among the more readily obtainable Quarter Eagles from the Charlotte Mint. On the other hand, it is one of only two obverse mintmark Two-and-a-Halves from this fabled Southern branch mint, the result of this fact being unflagging collector demand at all levels of preservation. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
