A boldly struck and only lightly abraded example with diminished luster, perhaps from past exposure to baking soda. Only 18,140 pieces were produced, and these are distributed into three known die marriages. Since only the major devices were hubbed onto Classic quarter eagle dies, they are often collected by die variety, similar to contemporary large cents. Variety 3-C was once regarded as an 1839/8-C overdate, until it was realized that other mintmark issues from 1839 have similar recutting on the 9, which suggests it was made from a defective punch. A relatively early die state that lacks the die break from star 2 to the chin.
