<B>1839-C $2 1/2 AU58 NGC.</B></I> Recut 39. Winter 3-C, McCloskey-C, R.3. Only 165-175 1839-C quarter eagles are believed extant today out of an original mintage of 18,140 pieces. AU pieces are very popular with collectors because of the Classic design and obverse mintmark. The devices on this piece are generally well defined, except for minor softness on the star centers. There are surprisingly few abrasions on either side; for pedigree purposes, we mention a tiny indention near star 6, and a couple of round abrasions under the E and R of AMERICA. A die crack travels from the upper left corner of the shield through the eagle's beak.
