1839-C $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Recut 39, Variety 3-C, McClosk
1839-C $2 1/2 AU55 NGC. Recut 39, Variety 3-C, McCloskey-C, Breen-6150 R.3. This is an outstanding example of this scarce Charlotte mint issue. The 1839 issue is far more obtainable than the 1838 date in the Classic Head type, thus the collector who seeks a coin with the Charlotte mintmark on the obverse should consider this piece. Only 18,140 pieces were struck and although somewhat obtainable in lower grades, the 1839-C is truly scarce at this grade level and finer. Two obverse dies were used for this year, one with a defective 9 date punch and the other with a repunched 9. Years ago the latter was catalogued as a 9 over 8 overdate. In his book, Douglas Winter estimates a surviving population in all grades to be 165-175 pieces. The example offered here is superior to most 1839-C quarter eagles offered with fewer than 25% attaining grades of AU or finer. Jeff Garret and Ron Guth in their book Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins 1795-1933 noted 140 auction appearances since 1991 with an average grade of 49.6. The medium orange-gold surfaces on this coin deepen significantly to a pronounced reddish hue around the margins. A bit softly struck, as usual for the issue. This is an excellent opportunity for the connoisseur to obtain a beautiful example of early Charlotte gold.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
