1839-C<$2 1/2> AU53 PCGS. Variety 3-C, McCloskey-C, Breen-6150, R.3. There are three different die varieties known for the 1839-C quarter eagles, which were given two entries in Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia. He described one as an 1839/8-C overdate, and the other as an 1838/39-C repunched date. It is not certain that a legitimate overdate variety actually exists. This example has a sharply repunched 39 in the date. The obverse is shattered with a crack through star 2 to Liberty's cheek, another through star 9 to the hair curls and T in LIBERTY, and a third through the digit 3 to Liberty's earlobe. The reverse is also cracked at the upper left, from the left shield point though the eagle's beak, and through the field over the left wing to the border at 10 o'clock. An attractive example with light yellow color and splashes of pale orange toning.
