1839-C $2 1/2 AU53 NGC
1839-C $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. Variety 3-C. Sharply repunched date; reverse crack from the beak to the field below the A in STATES. For the date and variety, the strike is excellent. While the radial lines on the stars are not fully formed, the hair is quite sharp and it shows nearly full separation between the individual strands. The wingtips are a bit weak (this is typically seen on this date) but the central reverse is quite bold. The surfaces are clean and choice. Minor friction is seen in the fields but little actual wear is noted. A considerable amount of frosty luster remains on the obverse and reverse. Perhaps the best feature about this coin is its pleasing, natural color. The obverse shows a rich yellow-gold hue while the reverse is more reddish-gold, particularly at the right border. This is an extremely pleasing piece with excellent eye appeal. Locating 1839-C quarter eagles that are not cleaned or processed is extremely difficult and this piece is choice enough for even the most particular collector. This coin is housed in an old NGC "fatty" holder and it appears to be conservatively graded by today's standards.
The 1839-C is among the most common Charlotte quarter eagles. It is much scarcer in the higher AU grades than most people realize (despite seemingly high PCGS and NGC population figures), and it is truly rare in properly graded Uncirculated.
From the Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: William Kneass

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
