1839/8, Type of 1838. PCGS graded AU-55. This is one of the most popular type coins and a real challenge to find this nice. This first type was only issued in 1838 and part of 1839 and were the original designs by Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht. Liberty shows two significant designs which were altered in late 1839 to the design which carried through into 1907 for this series. First off Libertys hair sweeps down over her ear and then is wrapped up in her bun tied with a beaded chord. Then the truncation line is quite dramatic with a sweeping arch and then terminates down the back of her shoulder in a point. Perhaps these features caused the dies to fail, or met with trouble with the controlling powers of the Mint. What we do know is that this is a most elegant representation of Liberty and one of the most favored by numismatists today. Sadly the limited numbers known only allow rather serious collectors to obtain an example. Today perhaps 225 pieces exist in all, this from a mintage of only 25,801 struck. Pop 9; 22 finer at PCGS.
