<B>1839 50C Small Letters--Environmental Damage--NCS. XF Details.</B></I> This is the famous transitional half dollar that has the obverse of the Capped Bust design with the reverse of the Seated Liberty design, sometimes called the "Reverse of 1840." This example has dark steel and gray-brown color on the obverse with lighter silver color on the reverse. Both sides have a few small edge bruises. It is extremely rare with only five or six specimens known. Just three examples were known to Walter Breen, who recorded the following in his <I>Complete Encyclopedia</B></I>:<BR> 1.
