1839 50C No Drapery MS64 NGC.
1839 50C No Drapery MS64 NGC. A first-year issue and an important one-year type, the 1839 No Drapery is the only coin in this series that displays Christian Gobrecht's original design for the Seated Liberty half dollar. The lack of drapery folds at Liberty's shoulder, as well as small letters around the reverse periphery, allowed for considerable open field space on both sides. Although a refreshing feature from an aesthetic standpoint, this airy design was a magnet for abrasions. It is little wonder, therefore, that pristine Mint State survivors are seldom seen in today's market. We last offered a near-Gem 1839 No Drapery Half Dollar (a PCGS certified specimen) as lot 7793 in our 2000 FUN Signature Sale. That coin was, at the time, most impressive, but this example is clearly superior. The present coin is highly lustrous and richly toned in speckled orange-russet shades. The surfaces display a smooth, frosty texture that is indicative of the assigned grade. Well struck on the obverse, the reverse is boldly defined everywhere except over the eagle's left (facing) leg feathers. For future identification purposes, a small group of scuffy ticks is seen above the eagle's head on the reverse. This example shares the MS64 grade level with nine other coins at NGC and PCGS (combined), and it is bettered by only three higher grade specimens (11/03). Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
