1839 50C No Drapery MS63 PCGS. The 1839 No Drapery is an important transitional year type that was minted for only a single year, being the only coin in the series that displays Christian Gobrecht's original design for the Seated Liberty Half Dollar. The lack of drapery folds at Liberty's shoulder, as well as small letters around the reverse periphery allowed for considerable open field space on both sides. Despite its significance at the time of issue, relatively few pieces were spared from circulation and perhaps only a few dozen Uncirculated coins are extant. The desirable Mint State representative offered here is notable for its fresh, original appearance, being fully lustrous beneath splashes of coppery-gold and blue iridescence. The strike is generally well executed, although there is noticeable deficiency on the eagle's left (facing) leg and talons. Population: 14 in 63, 8 finer (1/05). Lot:7028
