1839 50C No Drapery AU58 NGC. WB-101. Extensive reverse die cracks show on this coin, from the same die used to strike the "so-called proofs" of this issue, as Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert (1993) phrase it. A crack runs from left of the H in HALF counterclockwise to the M in AMERICA, while a second joins the rim with the nearby olive leaf, continuing upward onto the shield and through the right (facing) wing to the R in AMERICA. The authors state: "Coins with this last cracked reverse are very scarce." More on this variety appears in a short article by Byron Powell entitled "An 1839 No Drapery Half Dollar with Reverse Die Crack," in The Gobrecht Journal, Collective Volume Number Three, p. 310, and in two follow-up "Letters to the Editor," on p. 311. Much luster remains on this AU58 example, despite the slight rub, with copper-gold toning. All of the design features are well impressed, and there are no marks inconsistent with the grade. What appears to be a faint clash mark is located under Liberty's left (right facing) elbow. Census: 29 in 58, 19 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
