1839 50C MS64 PCGS. The consignor of this coin considers it to be JR-5, R.8, but we cannot definitely confirm this. The field does appear to be rising in front of Liberty's face and neck, one of the JR-5 diagnostics. In his 1988 Variety Identification Manual, Jules Reiver indicates that the reverse is the same for JR-3, JR-4, and JR-5, with lumps under ED of UNITED and between D and S of STATES, but then for JR-3, specifically alludes to "several lines down to left from dentils over the left side of M1" (the M in AMERICA). Those lines are plainly visible on this coin. Reiver assigned high rarity values to both JR-3 and JR-5 (R.6 for the former and R.8 for the latter).
This near-Gem displays wonderful frosty luster that is covered in clear red-gold, along with iridescent silver-blue at the rims. A powerful strike imparts excellent detail on the design elements, further enhancing the coin's outstanding eye appeal. A couple of trivial handling marks prevent an even higher grade. An elusive steam-struck half dollar that is sure to elicit considerable interest from Reeded Edge half enthusiasts. Population: 34 in 64, 5 finer (4/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
