1839<$5> MS62 PCGS. This issue is from the first year of the Coronet or Liberty Head type, designed by Christian Gobrecht, and it is technically a one-year subtype, as the design underwent additional subtle changes in 1840. David Akers, writing in 1979, commented that "high grade specimens, i.e. coins grading AU or Unc., are very rare and choice Mint State pieces are virtually unobtainable." Twenty-seven years later, the situation is the same: The Garrett-Guth gold Encyclopedia calls the date "scarce in Uncirculated and quite rare in full Mint State," noting that the average grade encountered from 1991 to 2006 is slightly higher than AU50. The finest examples graded are MS64.
This pleasing Mint State example offers canary-yellow surfaces that are somewhat prooflike, with light field chatter and a miscellany of small ticks, none overly distracting. The small rust pit on the neck is diagnostic of the issue. The central strike is bold, with good delineation on the eagle's details, but most of the obverse stars are softly struck, with only about five showing central detail. Population: 6 in 62, 5 finer (8/06).
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
