<B>1839 $2 1/2 AU58 PCGS.</B></I> The 1839 quarter eagle is much rarer than perceived (Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, 2006), as can be seen from the relatively small number of high-end AU and Mint State pieces certified by PCGS and NGC (about 30 specimens). The rich apricot-gold surfaces of this AU58 example displays partially prooflike fields, and has benefited from a sharp strike. A handful of minuscule reverse marks are not bothersome.
