<B>1839 $10 Type of 1838, Large Letters MS62 NGC.</B></I> There are numerous differences between the 1839 Type of 1838, also known as the Large Letters variety, and the 1839 Type of 1840, also known as the Small Letters variety, but the easiest and quickest confirmation is to look at the bust truncation. On the Type of 1838 it is quite pointed and lies over star 13, while on the Type of 1840 it is much more rounded and lies considerably to the left of that star. Most examples of this issue are believed to be overdates, although Breen lists a normal-date variety that may be an example of a late die state. This piece has great luster and attractive green-gold surfaces. A few light, miscellaneous field ticks and small digs account for the grade, but the eye appeal is right.
