<B>1839 $10 Type of 1838, Large Letters AU55 PCGS.</B></I> The Type of 1838 was formerly known as the Large Letters, to distinguish it from the redesigned Type of 1840/Small Letters coins that followed later in the year, but the type could just as easily be called Pointed Bust. This piece is a virtual match for the 1838 eagle in this same auction, if in a bit higher grade. Although Walter Breen's <I>Complete Encyclopedia</B></I> enumerates a nonoverdate 1839, the smart money today says such a coin is a late die state of the overdate.<BR> The present example shows bold traces of the underdigit 8 protruding from beneath the bottom-right loop of the 9. Much luster remains over the orange-gold surfaces, and the entire coin offers an extremely pleasing appearance.
